Also known as "the pearl of the Dolomites", Lienz is a very sunny city and lies exactly where the Drautal, Pustertal and Iseltal valleys merge. The capital of East Tyrol strikes visitors with its Mediterranean climate, its rich cultural offer and numerous shops. From June to September the main square Lienzer Hauptplatz is accessible only to pedestrians who can enjoy a cup of coffee in the heart of the city.
Schloss Bruck is a castle housing the regional museum of Lienz. This 13th century fortress owes its name to the bridge crossing the Isel river at its foot. The monument is complete with the Egger-Lienz-Galerie, an art gallery showcasing the works of the eponymous painter from East Tyrol. The Tammerburg is another historic buliding with cross vault. Culture lovers should definitely not miss the Phonomuseum, a museum dedicated to music recording instruments like record players and phonograph cylinders. Besides its parish church boasting one of the most precious Baroque altars of the town, Lienz is also home to the only evangelic church of East Tyrol. The archaeological excavation site "Aguntum" lies right outside of the city.
Those who would like to enjoy active holidays in a verdant nature or in a snowy landscape can do so in the Hohe Tauern national park (Nationalpark Hohe Tauern) where you can undertake relaxing walks or demanding hikes. An attraction appreciated by children is the Moosalm, an educational farm with an adventurous playground in a forest.
In winter Lienz turns into a paradise for winter sports lovers thanks to its vicinity to the Zettersfeld and Hochstein skiing areas which also feature the small Haiderhofe ski lift, suitable for beginners and children. Sledders can have fun along the Hochstein-Buchenwaldweg sledge runs and on the natural tracks in the Lienz Dolomites and on the Schlossberg. Lienz is complete with an ice rink where children and adults can practise ice skating or play hockey. We also recommend visiting the Wildpark Assling which is home to more than 100 different animal species.
Discover nightlife in Lienz in all its facets: enjoy an evening at the Cine-X cinema where also 3D films are shown in its four cinema halls. Round off the evening with a dinner at the Asian restaurant and have fun at the space dedicated to entertainment. Lienz is a true gem you shouldn't miss.
