Oberlienz

Altitude: 700 - 950 metres a.s.l.

The municipality of Oberlienz lies northwest of the sunny city of Lienz at the entrance to the Iseltal valley. It comprises the hamlets of Oberlienz, Oberdrum and Glanz and belongs, together with the villages Thrum and Gaimberg to the so-called sunny villages. Oberlienz boasts a unique cultural landscape made of hedges and forests. Archaeological findings like the Villa Rustica, a Roman noble residence in Lesendorf, vouch for the long history of this place.

Oberlienz is embedded among the peaks of the Lienz Dolomites and the Villgraten Mountains in the south. The main peaks, as well as well-known hiking destinations are the Blossenegg (2,146 m a.s.l.), the Bösem Weibele (2,521 m a.s.l.), the Hochstein (2,057 m a.s.l.) and the Hinterer and Vorderer Lavantspitze. If you are not into hiking you can try llama trekking. Passionate cyclists can try the cycle track Iseltalradweg or undertake unforgettable tours. In winter the village attracts numerous winter sports lovers thanks to its vicinity to the Zettersfeld Hochstein skiing area. Cross-country skiers will find several tracks in the valley.

Cultural attractions not to miss in the village are the parish church of Oberlienz, the St. Helena church, as well the buildings of the outdoor museum including a smithy, a corn mill and a granary.

The "Puppenheimat", a doll museum set up by Ms. Luise Oberhauser, hosts a collection of almost 500 self-made dolls that almost appear to be real. If you would like to discover more about the culture and the traditions of this area we highly recommend visiting this museum.
