Oberlienz

The “flower village“ of Oberlienz is located in the beautiful Lienz Dolomites at the entrance of the Isel Valley

Altitude: 700 - 950 metres a.s.l.

The municipality of Oberlienz, which comprises the localities of Oberlienz, Oberdrum and Glanz, lies at the entrance of the idyllic Isel Valley and is one of the three so-called sun villages ("Sonnendörfer“). The other two are Thurn and Gaimberg. Its cultivated landscape is characterised by terraces of alternating hedge and tree rows. Some archaeological findings, like the Roman Villa Rustica in Lesendorf, reveal that the first settlements around Oberlienz go back to ancient times.

Particularly striking in the surroundings is of course the beautiful world of mountains, the Lienz Dolomites, perfect for both easy and challenging hiking tours. In the south of Oberlienz there are the Villgraten mountains with the Böses Weibele (2,521 m a.s.l.), the Blossegg (2,146 m), the Hochstein (2,057 m) and the Hintere and Vordere Lavantspitze mountains. If your children are not in the mood of hiking, try a lama trekking tour with them: this is a great experience both for adults and children! To those of you who prefer cycling, we recommend the Isel Valley cycling trail ("Iseltalradweg“) and the many other cycling tours around Oberlienz. Skiing passionates will be enchanted by the ski region of Zettersfeld/Hochstein and cross-country skiers can try the different runs in the valley.

On your sightseeing tour through Oberlienz don't miss the parish church of Oberlienz, the church of Oberdrum and the St. Helene church. Very interesting is also the smithy, the corn mill and the public bath. Also worth to be visited is the oratory chapel with its life-size wooden sculptures and the doll museum. The latter exhibits about 500 dolls on an exhibition surface of 130 sq m. These dolls were realized by Mrs. Luise Oberhauser in detail work over several decades.
