St. Johann im Walde

The charming village of St. Johann im Walde lies in the heart of the Isel Valley, only 14 km from the city of Lienz

Altitude: 748 metres a.s.l.

St. Johann im Walde is located in a very idyllic position in the Isel Valley, between Lienz and the turn-off to the Defereggen Valley. Its municipality comprises the localities St. Johann in the South of the Drau river and Unterleibnig near the Felbertauern road. Also the farms of Oberleibing, Oblass, Öberst and Michlbach, once only accessible via funicular, are part of St. Johann im Walde. Today these farms can be reached on a road.

To those particularly interested in culture we recommend to visit to the parish church of St. Johann. Its oldest part is the baptistery, which dates back to the year 1177. Because of some damaging floods this church had to be restored and partly rebuilt several times. Also some chapels are worth to be visited: the St. Joseph in Michelbach chapel, the Zur Hl. Dreifaltigkeit chapel and the Sieben Schmerzen Mariens chapel.

Alpine meadows, mountain brooks, beautiful lakes: St. Johann im Walde and its surroundings offer a lot of natural jewels. The best way to explore them is by foot, enjoying the fresh air and great views. The Hohe Tauern National Park is very recommendable for family trips and hiking tours. Mountain bikers will find exciting biking trails of every difficulty here.

By the way: St. Johann im Walde has got several associations, for example a country wrestling team ("Ranggeln”) and a traditional music band! Try to see a competition or a concert, you will certainly not regret it!
