Schlaiten (876 m a.s.l.), one of the smallest municipalities of East Tyrol, is not well-visible due to its position above the valley floor. However, the village and its hamlets Plone, Gonzach, Mesnerdorf, Bacherdorf, Gantschach and Göriach are definitely worth a visit.
In former times Schlaiten was an important mining centre, today it is a sought-after holiday destination embedded in a stunning natural landscape. In its surroundings you can practise several leisure activities, as well as visit the Hohe Tauern National Park. The municipality extends to the mountain range of the Defereggental. We highly recommend a hike to the Hochschober-Hütte, which is an ideal starting point for a tour from hut to hut in the Schober group. Otherwise you can undertake a hike to the isolated Alkuser See, a wonderful alpine lake.
Other leisure activities you can practise here are mountain biking, kayaking and rafting.
Winter sports enthusiasts can easily reach the skiing areas in the surroundings of Lienz, including the Lienzer Bergbahnen skiing area. Lienz also features several cross-country ski tracks.
