Kartitsch

The village of Kartitsch in the Gailtal Valley is surrounded by the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps

Altitude: 1,356 metres a.s.l.

Kartitsch lies in the Gailtal Valley in the Upper Val Pusteria and is surrounded by the impressive mountains of the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. Kartitsch can look back on a long history: it was inhabited by the Romans in the 3th and 4th century AD and was first mentioned as “Kartisa”. Its position makes of Kartitsch a perfect starting point for many hikes in the beautiful mountain panorama: lush meadows, high peaks and clear mountain air will make of your holiday a real nature adventure! And also the beautiful Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol/Italy are only 12 km away. Moreover, Kartitsch offers a wide range of sports possibilities like tennis, soccer, mini-golf, mountain biking, climbing and golf at the near golf centre.

To those of you particularly interested in culture, we recommend to visit the pilgrimage site of Kartitsch, the small Maria Hilf church located above the village. It was planned and built in 1680 by the South Tyrolean architect Michael Niedergatscher. Today, the church hosts different exhibitions, weddings or big family parties.

In winter the Gailtal valley is one of the snow-sure valleys of East Tyrol and guarantees snow fun until spring! Two ski lifts in Kartitsch take you up to the skiing region Dorfberg-Kartitsch. Moreover, Kartitsch offers a 60 km long cross-country ski network and 20 km of winter hiking trails leading through its wonderful unspoiled winter landscape.

A very special attraction of Kartitsch is the Obstans ice cave at the homonymous waterfall, reachable in less than an hour. Don’t forget to take a torch with you when you enter into the ice cave. Most of the 800 m long cave system is still unexplored!
