A hike to lake Obstanser at 2,304 m a.s.l. starts in Kartitsch in the Winklertal. The alpine lake and the eponymous hut (open during the summer months) are accessible in summer. The view ranging from the Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol to the Grossglockner, the highest peak of Austria and the so-called "King of the Eastern Alps" in East Tyrol is simply amazing.
The 8.3-metre deep lake lies at the border between East Tyrol and the Italian province of Belluno. Between 1915 and 1917 the frontline of the Great War passed through this area.
However, lake Obstanser is not the only highlight of this hike. In the proximity of the lake extends the about 800-metre long partially explored ice cave named Obstanser Eishöhle. 100 metres of this natural attraction were made accessible to the public and can be visited during guided tours.
