Lake Braies

The so-called “Pearl of the Dolomites” is located at 1,469 m in the Valle di Braies

It is not only one of the most beautiful lakes of South Tyrol, but also one of the deepest waters: the deepest point of Lake Braies is about 36 m, its average depth about 17 m. The setting of this mountain lake is unique, as it stretches in the northern part of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature park on a surface of 31 hectares, surrounded by a imposing backdrop. The origins of the lake are attributable to a mud-flow.

Also in mythology, Lake Braies has an important role to play. According to legends it was possible to reach the subterranean reign of the Fanes. The gate to the lake is considered to have been situated at the end of the lake, where the imposing Croda del Becco (2,810 m a.s.l.) rises into the sky. In fact, this mountain is also called the "Sass dla Porta“, the mountain gate.

The "Pearl of the Dolomites“ is suitable for an extended walk along the lakeside, as there is a path round the whole lake. For those who aim higher can do several hiking tours starting from the lake. The Dolomite high path n° 1 for example starts right here. By the way, you can also make a boat tour on the lake. Only the most venturesome dare to make a jump into the refreshing waters.

Between July 10th and September 10th 2023 between 9 am and 4 pm the Braies valley can only be reached by public transportation, on foot, by bicycle or on presentation of a parking space reservation or a valid transit permit. A shuttle service with mandatory advance booking has been set up.
