Lake Dorfer lies in the eponymous valley among the impressive peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park in East Tyrol. Some years ago the construction of an artificial lake was planned. However, the lake was never built and the now protected area is nowadays a popular hiking destination in the summer months.
In the valley you can undertake several hikes along the path surrounding Lake Dorfer or along the "Nationalpark-Lehrweg", an educational path dedicated to the Hohe Tauern national park. We recommend hiking to the "Dabaklamm" gorge where you can admire the lake from different panoramic viewpoints.
The 3-hour hike to Lake Dorfer starts in the village of Burg, a hamlet of the municipality of Kals am Grossglockner in the aforementioned national park. The path first leads to the Kalser Tauernhaus hut in the Hohe Tauern before ascending to the lake at 1,935 m a.s.l. This body of water is a highly sought-after photo motif, especially in early summer when the alpine roses are in full bloom and the area around the lake is coloured in different shades of red.
