Matrei, the most extensive municipality of East Tyrol, lies in the impressive natural landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest nature park of central Europe. It includes more than 150 mountains above 3,000 metres, among which the highest peaks of Austria, that is, the Grossglockner (3,798 m a.s.l.) and the Grossvenediger (3,674 m a.s.l.) which frame this stunning holiday destination. Of course this area also provides the ideal conditions for practising outdoor sports, as well as the first educational path about water in Europe.

Here you can undertake pleasant walks e.g. along the educational path "Weg der Sinne" (sensory path), undertake hikes to Malga Zunig and the eponymous lake which reflects the Grossglockner. Matrei and its surroundings also offer several rock walls with routes ranging from level 3 to 9, as well as climbing courses. Other sports that can be practised in Matrei include mini golf, mountain biking, tennis and horse riding.

In winter the Großglockner Resort Kals - Matrei skiing area features more than 110 km of perfectly prepared ski slopes, as well as several activities for children and 15 km of black pistes for well-trained skiers.

We also recommend undertaking a cycling tour along the Iseltal cycle track and trying fly fishing. Another impressive hiking destination you should definitely not miss is Weissenstein Castle, a 900-year old fortress which obtained its current name in the 14th century. Today it is in private hands and can therefore be visited only from outside. Adventure seekers will have fun rafting on the Isel brook, one of the last completely intact glacial streams of the Alps.
