The late medieval Schöneck castle is situated at an altitude of 958 m a.s.l. and is famous for being the birthplace of Oswald von Wolkenstein (1377-1445), a famous poet and minnesänger. However, this event is not supported by any historical evidence. The remains of the Pacherhof farm, the birthplace of the well-known painter and sculptur Michael Pacher, are supposed to be found in its immediate surroundings.
The fortress was erected by the Lords of Rodeneck in the mid 13th century and was first mentioned in written documents from 1155 and 1164. In the course of time the castle was acquired by the Counts of Tyrol and later by Engelmar von Villanders who was mentioned as the owner of the court of Schöneck.
The keep, part of the residence building, the remains of the chapel and some parts of its historic walls are still visibile today. The chapel ruin houses a fresco by Michael Pacher. Today, the fortress is in private hands and cannot be visited. The eponymous restaurant is situated in the surroundings.
