Winter hike to the Uwald mountain hut

The Uwald mountain hut in the Val Casies is one of the most popular huts in the Val Pusteria - it is worth a visit also in winter

The Fondo Valle mountain hut (bus stop, parking) at Santa Maddalena in the Val Casies is starting point of our winter hike to the Uwald mountain hut. Here, near the little skiing area of Casies, we follow the path n° 12 which proceeds uphill into the valley. Past farms we reach the forest. The snowy forest road becomes a bit steeper and proceeds towards the Pfoital now.

In the Pfoital valley we reach a road junction where we take the path n° 12A towards the Uwald mountain hut. The path proceeds uphill until about 2,000 m a.s.l. and the view opens up on the entire valley, the Villgraten Mountains and until the Braies and Sesto Dolomites. The Uwald hut is already in sight and awaits us with a traditional menu. For our way back we take the same route, which is also suitable for sledging.

Those who plan a longer and more demanding hike, e.g. on snow shoes or touring skis, can carry on walking along the "Almweg 2000" path, starting at the Uwald mountain hut, to neighbouring huts, ridges or summits.
