Earth pyramids

Ideal for a family excursion are the earth pillars of Terento and Plata in Val Pusteria

This natural monument represents one of the most popular destinations for families of the Val Pusteria valley. What you are going to see is an exceptional natural phenomenon which has been created by mother nature and which, in the course of time, has been shaped and reformed by the weather. In Val Pusteria, you can discover this phenomenon either in Terento or in Plata, in East Tyrol in the village of Iselsberg-Stronach.

The earth pillars above Terento emerged subsequent to the historic thunderstorm in 1834, in which huge masses of earth and debris were flushed away by the Rio di Terento river. In the years after, rain and snow-fall modelled and formed the pillars, which stood the test of time due to a covering stone at their top, protecting the pillars. However, the material of the earth pyramids dates back to the last Ice Age.

Ideal for families with kids (but not with prams), the earth pillars can easily be reached on foot. The earth pillars are going to leave a lasting impression, not only with your kids. Schedule about 40 minutes for one way, the altitude difference is about 230 m.
