S. Maddalena

S. Maddalena is located at the head of the Valle di Casies and is the birth place of the padre Joachim Haspinger.

S. Maddalena comprises the villages of S. Maddalena Vallalta, S. Maddalena Valbassa and represents the last village of the valley. Inhabited by 330 people and located at 1,400 m asl, it is surrounded by the idyllic head of the valley with the Vedrette di Ries mountains and the Defregger Alps. The highest farmsteads, however, are situated at almost 1,530 m asl. Nature in and in the surroundings of the village is the real gem of this place and provides the most varied possibilities regarding leisure activities the whole year round.

Hiking across the Almenweg 2000, to the Malga Verseller, Pfoitenalm or Uwaldalm, a cycling tour across the Talblickweg, follow the call of nature. In winter S. Maddalena is particularly popular with those who love natural sledge, as there is a natural track where also competitions are staged. If you prefer skiing, there is a ski lift in the village, while S. Maddalena is likewise popular with those who love ski touring. Popular destinations are the Monte Alto and the Rotlahner. However, the most comfortable way to experience the valley is a ride in the horse-drawn carriage, galloping across the fairytale wonderland.

Our tip: retrace to past in the farm museum Voadohuibn. This is where Eduard Hofmann tells you about how hard farmers’ work used to be in ancient times.
