Castle of Rasun Vecchia

The castle of Rasun Vecchia southeast of Rasun di Sotto dates back to 1200

The Castle of Rasun Vecchia rises on a wooden hill overlooking the church of Rasun id Sotto. The fortress was built by the Lords of Rasun around 1200 and first mentioned in a document of the bishop of Bressanone. However, the monument changed hands already in 1259 when Meinhard II assigned it to his wife.

In the 13th century Rasun di Sotto was the seat of the court of the Val Pusteria. In 1553 the monument was acquired by the Lords of Welsperg who left it to decay. The ruins of the keep, the residence building and the curtain wall are still visible.
