St. Johann im Walde

The wonderful village of St. Johann im Walde in the heart of the Iseltal is only 14 km from Lienz

Altitude: 748 metres a.s.l.

The small municipality of St. Johann im Walde in the heart of the Iseltal is situated between Lienz and the entrance to the Iseltal valley. The districts of this place are St. Johann south of the Drava and Unterleibnig along the Felbertauernstrasse. The Oberleibnig, Oblass, Öberst and Michelbach farms belong to the municipality of St. Johann im Walde as well. In past times those farms could be reached only by cable car but today there is a road leading up to them.

Culture lovers should not miss the parish church of the village which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The oldest part of this church is the baptistery from 1177. During the centuries this monument was renovated several times after having been destroyed in numerous floods. We also recommend visiting the St. Joseph chapel in Michelbach, the chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Seven Sorrows chapel.

In the fantastic natural landscape around St. Johann you can admire verdant alpine pastures, mountain brooks, lakes and numerous other natural gems during relaxing hikes in the unspoilt nature. The Hohe Tauern national park is particularly suitable for family excursions. Mountain bikers can have fun along the extensive network of trails and itineraries.

Interesting: St. Johann im Walde counts many different associations which organise several events you can attend throughout the year. Whether you go to a concert of local music groups or watch a ranggln competition - you will definitely find the right activity for you.
