The Fondo Valle mountain hut (bus stop, car park) in Santa Maddalena in the Val Casies is the starting point for today's hike to Malga Uwald. We start walking at the small skiing area of Casies where we take path no. 12 which initially slightly ascends to the centre of the valley. We hike past some farms before entering the forest. Here we need to tackle a steeper forest road which deviates towards the Pfoital valley.
In the small Pfoital we arrive at a fork where we follow path no. 12A to malga Uwald. Here, at about 2,000 m a.s.l. we admire the stunning view of the entire valley, the Villgraten mountains and even of the Braies and Sesto Dolomites. Malga Uwald is still visible from here and we are really looking forward to enjoying a typical delicious lunch. For our return we retrace our steps. This path could also be made by sledge.
If you would like to extend this excursion we recommend proceeding with snowshoes or skis along the "Almweg 2000" path which starts from Malga Uwald. You can ascend to the nearby huts, saddles and peaks to make this hike more challenging.
