Kartitsch

The village of Kartitsch in the Gailtal Valley is surrounded by the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps

Altitude: 1,356 metres a.s.l.

The village of Kartitsch in the Gailtal in the Alta Pusteria is surrounded by the Alpi Carniche (Karnische Alpen) and the Dolomites. Thanks to its vicinity to the ancient via Romana, this area was settled already in the 3rd or 4th century AD and was initially mentioned in documents with the name of "Kartisa". Its position makes this locality a perfect destination for active holidays and its verdant meadows, high peaks and the fresh mountain air ensure an unforgettable holiday in nature. Kartitsch is only 12 km from South Tyrol and this is why we recommend undertaking memorable hikes in the Sesto Dolomites. This mountain village offers a wide range of outdoor sports including tennis, football, minigolf, mountain bike and vie ferrate. A golf court is available in its surroundings.

A famous hiking destination for culture lovers is the "Maria Hilf" pilgrimage site slightly above the village. According to legends the church was built following a miracle which occurred in 1650. The monument was planned and built by Michael Niedergatscher, an architect from Stegona near Brunico (South Tyrol) in 1680. Today the site is a sought-after location for weddings, family gatherings and exhibitions.

The Gailtal is one of the most snowy valleys of East Tyrol and thus ensures unforgettable moments in the snow during winter and spring. The "Dorfberg-Kartitsch" skiing area is complete with two chair lifts starting directly from the village. The skiing area features a network of 60 km of cross-country ski tracks and 20 km of hiking paths embedded in a stunning, unspoilt winter landscape.

We highly recommend a visit to the Obstanser Eishöhle with the eponymous waterfall, an ice cavern with waterfall reachable within 2 hours of walking time. The cavern can be entered with a torch or front lamp and only the first 100 metres can be visited. Most of these 800 m of caverns have not been explored yet.
