The Hohe Tauern, a mountain range within a protected area in East Tyrol, are a natural habitat for numerous animal and plant species. In the former primary school of Matrei you can discover the uniqueness of the
national park thanks to videos displaying fascinating pictures of the 3,798 m high Großglockner.
The multimedial exhibition extends over two floors and includes six rooms dedicated to the following topics: eagles and lammergeier living in the park, also known as the "die fliegenden Könige der Lüfte" (the Kings of the skies), "Interaktive Rätselspiele für Besucher aller Altersklassen" (interactive riddles for visitors of all ages), "umrahmt von Jahrtausende alter Kulturlandschaft" (embedded in a millennial cultural landscape) which includes very interesting places like the Jagdhausalm at the end of the Defereggental valley, "Blaue Wundergrotte Gletschertor" (the blue, miraculous Gletschertor cavern), "Land der 1.000 Wasser" (the country of the 1,000 waters) with the Umbaufälle waterfalls and last but not least, the "Arche Noah der Extreme" (the Noah's ark of the extremes).
The staff of the national park organises highly interesting guided tours meanwhile little guests can have fun in the children's area.
