Ski tour to Mt Magro

This fabulous ski tour takes us to the summit of the Monte Magro, a famous 3,273 m high mountain in the Vedrette di Ries

Early in the morning we start our ski tour from the Säge mountain tavern (1,580 m a.s.l.) in Riva di Tures and start walking on the path n° 8 towards the Roma mountain hut. Soon the broad path transforms into a narrow trail that guides our way through the forest. Ski crampons are necessary for this stage, as the snow is icy! After about 2 hours of walking, we reach the Roma mountain hut (2,274 m), where we decide to make a short break.

From the mountain hut, we walk up the steep slope in southern direction, and past the striking Mt Covoni we head for the Tristenferner Glacier. We continue walking up, with no end in sight. On our left, two mighty mountains: Collalto and Collaspro. When we reach the upper edge of the glacier, we scale the highest point in zigzag in order to admire the spectacular view at 3,273 m to the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, Mt Marmolada, Mt Croda Rossa and the Austrian and Swiss Alps.

The ride down is just great, there are 20 cm of powder snow and spacious grounds for skiing. After a stop at the Roma mountain hut (also ideal for an overnight stay) we ride down to the valley, in direct line, underneath the goods cable lift. This is where you need to overcome a very steep hollow which is often terribly iced. Finally we reach the Säge mountain tavern again.

Please note: Mt Magro is one of the classics in the Valle di Riva and the Vedrette di Ries mountain range. No special alpine and technical difficulties. Ask for the current conditions at the Roma mountain hut! Ascent requires stamina, the way down in the lower part also skiing skills. No glacier equipment required with favourable conditions.
