The village of San Giovanni at 1,018 m a.s.l. owes its name to St. John the Baptist to whom the parish church is consecrated. This sacral monument with its impressive onion dome houses a wonderful altar by Franz Josef Schöpf. San Giovanni is the birthplace of the brothers Josef Georg (a poet) and Johann Baptist Oberkofler (priest and painter). Their artworks can be admired at the cemetery of San Giovanni.
The mineral museum of San Giovanni is also worth a visit. It exhibits 950 minerals on an exhibition area of 300 sq m. All the precious minerals and healing stones were collected in the Zillertal Alps and Alti Tauri.
The village in the heart of the Valle Aurina is surrounded by meadows and forests, making it a paradise for nature lovers. The entire area features an extensive network of hiking paths and mountain huts where you can stop for a relaxing lunch break during your hikes. The Klausberg and Speikboden skiing areas are only a stone's throw from San Giovanni.
