Ski tour to Mt Gruppo

The 2,809 m high Mt Gruppo in the Fundres Mountains is quite steep and accessible from the Val Vena in Terento

Our starting point is the parking space in the Val Vena in Terento at 1,412 m a.s.l. By our touring skis we walk into the valley along the forest path, always following the signpost "Rifugio Lago di Pausa/Tiefrastenhütte". Past the Astnerbergalm mountain hut and the valley station of the Tiefrastenhütte material ropeway we climb up in a few serpentines until the timber line. Above the waterfall on our left we traverse a the small mountain hut (caution in danger of avalanches!). From here the summit of Mt Gruppo is already visible.

Through the valley floor and across a steep hollow we climb up to the Lake Pausa mountain hut, located at 2,312 m. After a break we carry on walking on the right bank of the homonymous lake until its end and across steeper slopes to a small basin below the summit. Now we have to manage the last and steep slope up to the peak (often icy, crampons are recommended!). We walk to the ridge east of the summit, where the ski depot is situated.

From here we walk on foot across the east ridge up to the summit which is marked with a stone pyramid. At the summit (2,809 m) we enjoy a gorgeous panoramic view from the Ortles-Cevedale Group to the Venediger Group, and from the Zillertal Alps to the Dolomites. Along the same route we come back to our starting point again.

Please note: this ski tour requires secure conditions! In spring an early start is obligatory because the slopes are quite exposed to the sun.
