The Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature park, one of the largest protected areas of South Tyrol, measures a surface of 25,680 hectares and stretches over the municipalities of Badia, Braies, Dobbiaco, San Vigilio di Marebbe, La Ila and Valdaora. The mountain ranges overlooking the park are composed of limestone and dolostone and formed following the fossilization of microorganisms living in the sea.
The geomorphology of this park is worth mentioning as no other area in the Dolomites is so heavily characterised by karst. Dissolved carbon dioxide in water eroded the Jurassic limestone, making it almost disappear. Today, the most significant remains of this natural phenomenon include channels, fissures, sink-holes and karst landscapes that can be admired in the park.
Lake Braies, a romantic natural gem in the nature park is embedded in a rock basin. Visitors can experience relaxing moments along its shores. Another fascinating spot you should not miss is Prato Piazza, a high plateau at 2,000 m of altitude and a well-known destination for hikes in nature.
Tip: we recommend walking along the nature path above San Cassiano in the municipality of Badia. This trail, connecting the farms of Rüdeferia and Rü, is complete with seven interactive, educational installations. Along the path you can admire different landscapes.
