Ski tour to Mt Pizzo Rosso Piccolo

This tour to Mt Pizzo Rosso Piccolo (3,289 m a.s.l.) near the higher Mt Pizzo Rosso is a popular winter destination for trained ski mountaineerers

Early in the morning, we start fromCasere where we cross the small bridge right of the Holy Spirit Church. Here we get on our skis and continue along a small valley at the right of the valley floor towards malga Labesualm at 1,751 m a.s.l. We face a steeper slope which leads us to another valley which we cross on the right side of the valley floor. The Valle del Vento is characterised by enormous avalanche cones and at some points we need to cross real avalanches. After a slight right bend we arrive at the so-called "Burgl", a slope leading directly to the Giogo Lungo. Right of the pass stands the rifugio Giogo Lungo hut (2,603 m a.s.l.).

We proceed along a short but steep section to our left, then traverse the ice field of the Rötkees at the foot of Pizzo Rosso diagonally (watch out for cracks!). We walk across this extensive ice field along a moderately steep slope with the peak already in sight. Once at the top (3,200 m a.s.l., attention, huge cornices!) we tackle the last 90 metres of elevation gain before reaching the summit of Pizzo Rosso Piccolo, also known as Untere Rötspitze or Rötschulter. Although not being low at all, Pizzo Rosso Piccolo is the smaller neighbour of the impressive Pizzo Rosso with its 3,495 metres of altitude. From Pizzo Rosso Piccolo you can enjoy a fascinating panoramic view of the more than 3,000 m high surrounding peaks, including Cima del Vento (3,051 m), Picco dei Tre Signori (3,499 m), Pizzo Rosso (3,495 m), Punta Merbe (3,090 m) and of the mountains of the Valle Aurina and further.

We descend along the same itinerary we followed for our ascent. The ice field covered with a particular type of snow is a dream come true for every ski mountaineerer and is undoubtedly the icing on the cake. In case of ideal conditions it is possible to choose a more direct route which does not involve a descent down to Giogo Lungo. The lower part of this hike is definitely difficult due to the presence of avalanche cones, however, it still offers a spectacular skiing experience!

Note: although not being difficult from a technical point of view, this tour requires an important level of physical fitness. It should be undertaken only in safe conditions and only if the slopes on the left side of the lower part of the itinerary are completely clear of snow. It is important to start early in the morning after a clear and cold night! Besides the fantastic view, you will definitely have fun while skiing across the Rötkees ice field. Possibility of overnight stay in the winter bedroom of the Giogo Lungo mountain hut.
