Ski tour to Mt Croda del Becco

Although being rather difficult and definitely challenging, this ski tour to Monte Croda del Becco above Lake Braies is highly recommended

We start our ski tour at the car park near Lake Braies (1,494 m a.s.l.) and hike along its Western shore (in case of insufficient presence of snow you need to take off your skis for this section, in mid-winter however, you can cross the lake with your skis). In the southern part of the lake we ascend along a slightly steep slope with numerous pine trees and head towards a narrow valley left of Monte Croda del Becco. This valley is characterised by protruding rocks (watch out! Danger of avalanches!). As we ascend, the valley narrows and becomes steeper. We cross the so-called "Buco del Giavo" along some hairpin bends.

After a short descent followed by a large left bend we arrive at a valley where another slight ascent awaits us. Then we need to tackle another short but steep section while approaching an impressive rocky wall which perfectly shows us the different rock layers it is made of. Above the basin right of the rock wall and left of Monte Croda del Becco (Sass dla Porta) we ascend to the Sora Forno pass at 2,388 m a.s.l. The rifugio Biella alla Croda del Becco (Seekofelhütte) stands to our left, slightly lower than the saddle. Now we are about to ascend the most technically challenging part of the ascent: with our skis attached to our backpacks we continue to hike along the steep eastern side. The initial non-secured section is followed by a rope-secured stage. Having tackled this section, which requires absolute sure-footedness, we get on our skis to ascend the moderately steep final ascent.

The summit cross of Monte Croda del Becco (2,810 m a.s.l.) is situated in the posterior part of the peak and delights us with a stunningly beautiful view of the Braies Dolomites and even farer. Watch out for the cornices on the summit! We descend along the same route and the section at the eastern crest has to be covered on foot also on your descent. The particular type of snow which is lining this part makes our skiing adventure an unforgettable experience. We recommend particular caution along the "Buco del Giavo" avalanche chute also during the descent because of its considerable steepness and irregularly-shaped terrain due to the avalanches.

Please note: in terms of skiing technique, this excursion is moderately difficult. However, its difficulty level definitely increases if taking into account the irregular terrain you need to tackle. Sure-footedness is absolutely required! According to the conditions you should consider bringing an ice axe and crampons with you to better manage the ascent across the "Buco del Giavo" avalanche chute. This tour should be undertaken only by expert ski mountaineerers as the elevation gain of the tour does not coincide with its real difficulty level. In any way your physical efforts will definitely be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view you can enjoy from the top of one of the most impressive mountains of the Braies Dolomites.
