Outdoor museum Monte Piana

While it used to be the scene of violent conflicts during the Great War, today Monte Piana is a famous hiking destination where the traces of World War I are still visible

Monte Piana (2,325 m a.s.l.) is a hiking area overlooking Lago di Landro, as well as an outdoor museum. From its peak you can admire the impressive Dolomite summits including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks), Monte Paterno and Monte Cristallo. A historic, rather flat path runs along this high plateau and can be covered in about 2.5 to 4 hours of walking time. Along the itinerary you can admire different trenches, galleries and emplacements from World War I. Some attractions of the outdoor museum can be reached only via exposed but secured spots. On Monte Piana Italians and Austrians fought bloody wars during which 14,000 soldiers lost their lives.
Today the museum is managed by different associations and by the Fondazione Monte Piana.

The starting point for a visit to Rifugio Bosi (2,205 m a.s.l.) where you can find different findings. The slightly further heroes chapel is dedicated to the fallen. The outdoor museum is accessible on foot from the Valle di Landro (challenging ascent, 4 hours of walking time), from Lago di Antorno (2.5 hours of walking) or from Lago di Misurina by a Jeep-shuttle service.
