MTB tour to Montassilone

Today's MTB-tour starts at the Piazza Mercato in Stegona near Brunico (812 m a.s.l., parking spaces and direct railway connection thanks to the station of Brunico). We follow the cycle path towards the Alta Val Pusteria towards east. We leave the city behind us and continue along the course of the Rienza river. To the left among fields and meadows lies the village of Teodone. Shortly after we arrive at a fork where we follow the signpost towards Lunes to the left. From here, we proceed uphill along asphalt mountain roads.

We cross the small hamlet of Lunes and head to Amaten. Monte di Perca delights us with stunning views of the valley, the meadows are covered with yellow dandelions and other spring flowers. We recommend stopping for a break at the restaurant Oberraut in Amaten. We cycle towards Montassilone (1,485 m a.s.l.) along a mountain road. In this small village by the road stands a wonderful church you should not miss. The panoramic view towards the Vedrette di Ries group is amazing as well. We follow the road towards Riomolino and if you would like to extend this tour you can do so by continuing to the Bagni di Riomolino in the valle di Rio Molino, a historic refreshment point which can be reached via a road branching off on the right shortly before arriving in Riomolino (about 100 metres of additional elevation gain).

The farms of Riomolino, a hamlet of the municipality of Gais, are located on steep slopes. Having left the village behind us, we take a road that first ascends and then descends in hairpin bends towards Villa Ottone. From here, we proceed along the Valle di Tures cycle path to Brunico and to our starting point in Stegona.

Please note: only asphalt roads. For trained mountain bikers this is an easy tour offering stunning views of the valley and the nearby mountain hamlets. This trip can be made also clockwise, however, this option is much more challenging!
