S. Giacomo

S. Giacomo is situated on a sunny slope and is one of the few villages where the art of wood carving continues to live on

The village of San Giacomo overlooks the valle Aurina from a sunny slope at 1,192 m a.s.l. The Gothic parish church was erected around 1500 on a slope and dedicated to St. James.

On the same hill you can also admire a new fountain built in 2003 by the artist Jakob Oberhollenzer. The impressive statue of St. James faces southwards towards Santiago de Compostela. In the past a path crossed the valley from north to south. Art lovers should definitely not miss the sculpture garden (Skulpturgarten) by Oberhollenzer. This exhibition space can be reached by walking along the "passeggiata Leonardi" which can be covered in a short excursion through the village.

Wood carving is a still practised handicraft in the village. In fact, the village of San Giacomo is particularly famous for its carved masks and sculptures far beyond the provincial borders.

San Giacomo boasts an extensive network of hiking paths which are ideal for wonderful walks in the marvellous nature surrounded by the impressive peaks of the mountains. Here alpinists can conquer more than 80 peaks above 3,000 m. In summer you can also practise mountain biking and nordic walking.
In winter the village is the gateway to the nearby skiing areas, including the Klausberg skiing area with its numerous ski slopes. Passionate cross-country skiers can discover the entire valley along the cross-country ski tracks and hiking paths at the foot of the impressive, more than 3,000 m high peaks.

We recommend undertaking a relaxing stroll along the Leonardi trail (sentiero Leonardi) which is equipped with several information boards revealing interesting facts on the area.
