The village of S. Maddalena is situated at the bottom of the Valle di Casies and is well-known for being the birthplace of the monk Joachim Haspinger

S. Maddalena includes the villages of Santa Maddalena Alta and Santa Maddalena Bassa and is the last village of the valley. It is home to 330 inhabitants and extends mainly on an altitude of 1,400 m a.s.l. The highest farms however are situated at an altitude of 1,530 m a.s.l. The valley bottom is enclosed by the ridges of the Vedrette di Ries and the Deferegger Alps. The true protagonist however is nature which delights visitors with exceptional views and landscapes and numerous possibilities of practising different activities.

The most memorable hikes are those along the Sentiero delle Malghe 2000 (Almenweg 2000) path and excursions to the malghe Verseller, Pfoitalm and Uwaldalm. Cyclists can undertake a bike tour along the Talblickweg path, a wonderful panoramic path through the Val Casies which is also suitable for children. In winter S.
