Assumption Day

The 15th of August is an important feast day in South Tyrol. The shops and offices remain closed on this day

In Italy, the Assumption Day which is celebrated every year on 15 August, is a national holiday. On this day, also known as Ferragosto in Italian and Mariä Himmelfahrt in German, shops and offices stay closed and many Italians enjoy their day off in the mountains of the Val Pusteria.

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven dates back to the 5th century. Thanks to Andreas Hofer, who entrusted the protection of Tyrol to the Holy Mary, this day became particularly important for the local population. Today, many processions and parades are organised in the Val Pusteria.
