The municipality of Casies in the eponymous side valley north of the Val Pusteria has 2,100 inhabitants. The municipal area extends from Tesido to Colle and from San Martino (the administrative centre) to S. Maddalena. The numerous farms and hamlets stretch along the 22 km long valley on altitudes ranging from 1,191 m to 2,837 m a.s.l. The valley is embedded among the peaks of the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina group and the Deferegger Alps.
Wonderful farmsteads, blooming alpine meadows and idyllic mountain landscapes characterise the valle Casies which is a highly appreciated destination by nature lovers and those seeking for relaxing holidays. The area is complete with a large network of hiking paths to the several malghe with refreshment points, such as the Kardorfer Alm, Stumpfalm, Houfahitte and Uwaldalm where you can enjoy local delicacies including the exquisite traditional "Speckbrettl" (a plate of local cured meats and mountain cheeses). Do not miss the "Gsieser Almhüttenfest" which is held every year in September.
The valley also hosts the so-called "Gsieser Tallauf", a cross-country ski race across the entire valley and provides a wide range of sports activities for everyone, including a ski mountaineering tour to Monte Alto and a sledge run at malga Mudler in Tesido
