St. Jakob in Defereggen Water Experience Trail

Water and its habitats can be experienced along the Water Experience Trail on the riverbank of the Schwarzach river.

Water is life! The glaciers and snow fields of the Alps are water reservoirs for the whole of Europe. The Defereggental valley is drained by the Rio Schwarzach. Along this river the St. Jakob in Defereggen Water Experience Trail runs, a family-friendly path on the valley floor.

Ideal starting point is the village of Mariahilf. At the chapel the signposts lead towards east to the banks of the Rio Schwarzach. During the first section there is access to a branch of the creek, later it follows the cycle path R102, always close to the watercourse and at the edge of the forest. Information panels tell about the flora and fauna of the valley and the various habitats.

We pass the farms of Grünmoos and the Sander Ebene playground. During the last section a turn until the hamlet of Lacken follows, where the trail ends. The trail is 4.8 km long, without any considerable ascents it is comfortably to walk. The murmur of the water, the forest and the meadows of the valley cause a relaxing atmosphere.
