We leave our car at the car park of the cross-country skiing centre in Riva di Tures. Path no. 1 ascends along the slope above the Bachertal valley right after the bridge crossing the Rio Reinbach. The route runs uphill across the forest and past the rifugio Terner Hütte and a stunning waterfall before arriving at the pastures at 2,000 m a.s.l. Having crossed the rio Tristenbach we only need to tackle a short but steep section to arrive at the rifugio Roma at 2,275 m a.s.l. Now we have overcome most of the elevation gain of this hike. Formerly known as Hochgall-Hütte hut, the rifugio Roma hut is the only refreshment point along the path to lago Maler.
Path no. 1A leads us towards north to lago Maler. The varied landscape above the forest limit is characterised by mountain meadows, piles of debris and rocks. Shortly before arriving at our destination we tackle a slight descent and a flat stretch at the foot of Monte Nevoso by crossing a ridge. Here, the glacier's meltwater formed a marsh and the fascinating mountain lake Malersee at 2,500 m a.s.l. This 170-metre long and 75-metre wide lake is surrounded by the impressive, more than 3,000 m high peaks of the Alti Tauri, Vedrette di Ries and Cima Dura ranges. We return along the same path.
