Hike to the Brigata Tridentina mountain hut

Erected by a hotel owner from Predoi, the Brigata Tridentina mountain hut (or Rifugio Forcella del Picco) between the Valle Aurina and the Austrian valley Krimmler Achental was built on a panoramic slope and is a sought-after hiking destination, especially during the summer months. Nature lovers and history enthusiasts come here to have lunch or to stay overnight before continuing their ascent to the Picco dei Tre Signori at 3,499 m a.s.l.

At the car park we take a large road towards Prastmann and the Holy Spirit Church in Casere. We continue walking along the banks of the Aurino river until we reach the Trinksteinalm and the Lahner Alm (definitely closed). The path is well-marked throughout. In the proximity of the malga Lahner Alm the valley broadens. We cross the brook and approach the end of the valley. from here we can already recognise the silhouette of the mountain hut and we realise that we still need to tackle a whole lot of elevation gain. Please note: if you don't want to ascend to the hut you can stop for a break along the riverbanks where you will find several quiet spots. As we continue walking, we observe a helicopter delivering food and beverages to the hut.

Having left the flat valley floor behind us, we ascend along the numerous hairpin bends leading us up to our destination. This section is definitely much more demanding than the previous ones. We stop a few times to admire the marvellous view towards the end of the valley and of the impressive Picco dei Tre Signori (3,499 m a.s.l.) glacier to our right. As we arrive at the hut we enjoy a rewarding lunch.

Please note: the Brigata Tridentina hut is perfect for a break before continuing your tour up to the Picco dei Tre Signori or to the Vetta d'Italia which is particularly interesting for history enthusiasts. You could also return to the valley by taking the Alta Via Vetta d'Italia, a high-altitude path secured with steep steps and ropes!
