Hike to the Neualpl Lakes

This short mountain hike takes us to the Neualpl lakes in the Schober group above the city of Lienz in East Tyrol

The Neualpl lakes are embedded among the peaks of Schleinitz and Goiselemandl at an altitude of 2,450 m a.s.l. We take the Zettersfeld cable car and then the Steinermandl ski lift to the starting point of our hike (2,200 m a.s.l.). There we take the Goiselemandl Weg Nord path through the Debanttal valley and to the Neualpl lakes.

The view of the eastern summits of the Schober group with the Hoher Petzeck (3,282 m a.s.l.) is truly impressive. The landscape around us is more rocky and rugged than before. After one hour of walking we arrive at two bigger and several smaller lakes, our destination. Their water reflects the surrounding mountains and the sky. The amassing clouds create a truly unique atmosphere as shade and light alternate.

On our way back we take path Goiselemandl Weg Süd (no. 913) to the mountain station of the ski lifts which parallels and is higher than the path we took before. The view of the Lienz Dolomites, the Sesto Dolomites in the background and the Defereggen Alps (Villgratner Berge) more northwards is simply impressive.
