Villa Ottone is only a stone's throw from the main village of Gais and has 840 inhabitants. Gais was first mentioned in 970 in the Freisinger Tauschbrief, an important written document. The Lords of Villa Ottone were mentioned only a century later, in the 11th century, when they built the castle overlooking the village. In former times the border between Taufers (Tyrol) and Uttenheim-Neuhaus (Görz) ran here.
The castle stands on the rocks above the village. Another building not to miss is the parish church of Villa Ottone consecrated to St. Margaret. This monument was built right where a lightning bolt had struck the previously erected church.
Here you can practise numerous leisure activities, including trekking, rafting, hiking, sledging and skiing. The Plan de Corones, Klausberg and Speikboden skiing areas with their extensive networks of hiking paths are easily accessible.
High above Villa Ottone between 1,250 m a.s.l. and 1,500 m a.s.l. stands the farm complex Anewandt which is definitely worth a visit.
