Gais village

Castel Neuhaus stands along an interesting path

The village of Gais at 840 m a.s.l. at the entrance to the Valle di Tures, has about 1,570 inhabitants and is surrounded by fields and forests. The S. John parish church from the 12th century is one of the most ancient churches of Tyrol. Another historically important building is the Pflegerhaus, which was the residence of the famous minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein in 1425.

The Kulturweg path in Gais starts along the main road and leads to Castel Neuhaus via shadowy forests. The stations along this relaxing path were set up by local artists who also realised the artworks showing famous people like the American poet Ezra Pound, the minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein and the sculptor Bacher. We recommend ending this stroll with a delicious meal at the castle restaurant.

The "Baggerlacke", a natural lake in the village, is a perfect destination for a refreshing swim or sunbathing. In winter, the village also features an ice rink and a sledge run for children. The Speikboden and Plan de Corones skiing areas are only a stone's throw from Gais.

Gais boasts a museum dedicated to fire helmets. Unique in its kind, the collection exhibits more than 600 fire helmets. On a rainy day, after visiting this museum, you can go for a shopping tour in Brunico.
