San Sigismondo

San Sigismondo west of Chienes is situated on the valley floor of the Val Pusteria

Despite not being a tourist destination, the village of San Sigismondo (St. Sigmund) still has a lot to offer. To get there you only need to leave the main road at the restaurant Gasthof zum "Treyen" and head towards the village centre. Here stands the parish church with its stunning winged altar which also features a precious Donauschule polyptych from 1440. The master of St. Sigmund, a famous late-Gothic painter, played an essential role in the construction of this altar and decorated it with four paintings depicting different scenes from St. Mary's life.

The campground of San Sigismondo extends along the shores of the Rienza river near the main road. Little guests can have fun on the playground with bouncy castle. From the village you can undertake different excursions along the "Dorfrundweg", the "Höfeweg" or the theme path dedicated to butterflies, the so-called "Schmetterling-Weg". Otherwise you could discover the city of Brunico by train.
