The Valle di Braies divides near Segheria. The road to Braies Vecchia, which branches off on the left, leads towards southeast past Ponticello and to Prato Piazza. In former times, this high plateau was a famous spa locality. According to legends, the water of this spring healed an injured deer and this is why it was also known as "Hirschbrunnen" (deer spring in German).
Lake Braies and Prato Piazza are the most beautiful natural gems of the municipality. Braies di Fuori at 2,000 m a.s.l. is embedded in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park which is overlooked by the impressive peaks of the Picco di Vallandro, the Croda Rossa, the Tofane and the Cristallo group. Nature photographers appreciate this area for its marvellous natural landscape in all seasons.
In winter, Prato Piazza turns into a cross-country ski centre. The tracks are covered both by recreational and professional cross-country skiers. Hikers find an extensive network of hiking paths, whereas climbers scale the Picco Vallandro, which ensures enchanting views especially at sunrise. Skiers can take the ski lifts from Braies Vecchia to the beginner ski slopes at Prato Piazza. We highly recommend a snowshoe hike to Monte Specie.
