Water is life! The glaciers and snowfields of the Alps are a huge water reservoir for Europe. The Defereggental valley in East Tyrol is crossed by the Rio Schwarzach. The St. Jakob in Defereggen Water Experience trail on the valley floor, a wonderful excursion for the whole family, runs along its banks.
The hamlet of Mariahilf is the ideal starting point for this excursion. The first signposts near the chapel lead us eastwards to the banks of the Rio Schwarzach. In the first section it is possible to access also a lateral branch of the brook but later on the path follows the cycle path R102 at the edge of the forest near the stream. Information boards explain interesting facts about the local flora and fauna, as well as the different natural habitats of this area.
The trail leads past the farms of Grünmoos and the playground Sander near St. Jakob in Defereggen. The last section runs along a bend towards the hamlet of Lacken where the itinerary ends. This large, around 4.8 km long path without notable ascents is suitable for everyone. The sound of the water, the forest and the meadows of the valley create a relaxing atmosphere.
