The malga Rötalm lies at the foot of the Pizzo Rosso in a wonderful side valley of the Valle Aurina

A visit to this malga is a travel back in time to the previous century. An ancient stove, wooden beams, an external bathroom and two tables remind of former times in today's modern world. The hut (definitely closed!) is situated on the bank of a brook and surrounded by impressive peaks. Here you can eat various home-made products, including bread, grey cheese, milk and fresh butter.
This easy, short but steep hike takes you to the malga by walking past a waterfall and an old miner's path from the 15th century. In this area you can see many copper extraction sites built by the locals. At the car park we take path no. 11 to malga Rossa (Rötalm, 2,116 m a.s.l.) and to the rifugio Giogo Lungo.
On our return we follow the same path for a few hundred metres and then turn left onto path no. 11B to Malga Bruggeralm and then the path no. 3 leading downhill on our right.
Please note: Malga Rossa (Rötalm) is definitely closed! (last updated: March 2026)
