The Grosse Sandspitze, the highest summit of the Lienz Dolomites and the Gailtal Alps, is also known as "Sunnspitz". The peak rises south of Lienz near the Laserzwand.
The first ascent dates back to 1886 and today the peak can be conquered on the vie ferrate (Klettersteig in German). The difficult Ari Schübel-Klettersteig is a via ferrata that starts at the Karlsbader Hütte hut at 2,261 m a.s.l. and leads up to the Grosse Sandspitze through a stunning natural landscape. The summit can be reached during a circular tour along the Laserz-Klettersteig or on the Panorama-Klettersteig.
