Hike from Riscone to the Plan de Corones

Our hike to the most famous skiing mountain of the Val Pusteria valley, proceeds through quiet woods off the ski lift facilities

Our alpine tour to the 2,275 m high Plan de Corones starts in Riscone near Brunico, at the parking space of the cable car in Reiperting (950 m a.s.l.). Along the well-prepared path no. 7 we walk towards southwest through the shady coniferous forests at the Urschenbichl hill until the Oberwelis Farms above S. Stefano. Shortly afterwards, the path no. 12 to Haidenberg branches at the left. Soon the path proceeds steeply uphill a forest slope to the little hamlet at 1,300 m. Here we take the path no. 4 further uphill to the Stefansdorfer Kaser mountain hut (1,650 m).

Now the really steep ascent starts until 2,000 m. Beneath the Col di Riscone (Walchhorn in German) near the Hirschlacke reservoir, the steep path no. 4 ends and meets the panoramic path no. 8 which proceeds straight to the summit of the Plan de Corones mountain. The last section is a bit steeper and can be avoided by taking path B. We pass the Rif. Plan de Corones mountain hut and reach the summit, where all the lift facilities end.

At the Concordia Peace Bell we visit a viewpoint, where all peaks from the main Alpine ridge until the Dolomites are drawn. Undoubtedly, the MMM of Reinhold Messner, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones is a true highlight, planned by the famous architect Zaha Hadid. The cable car takes us down to Riscone again.
