Earth pyramids

The earth pyramids of Terento and Plata are a true natural attraction

One of the most popular hikes of the Val Pusteria runs along the path to the earth pyramids. Earth pyramids are peculiar natural formations composed of an earth pillar covered by a large boulder which formed over the centuries. You can visit them in South Tyrol (Italy) in Terento and in Plata or in Iselsberg-Stronach in East Tyrol (Austria).

The earth pyramids overlooking the village of Terento formed following a violent storm that hit this area in 1834. This natural disaster caused several landslides which then ended up in the Terner Bach brook. During the following years the rain and the meltwater eroded this already friable terrain. The pillars covered by a protective boulder formed over the centuries, whereas the material they are composed of dates back to the last ice age.

The path leading to the earth pyramids can be easily covered by families with children (it is not suitable for baby carriages!). This adventure provides interesting information on this peculiar natural phenomenon. The overall walking time is about 1h 30 minutes with a total difference in altitude of 230 metres.
