The hamlet of Santa Maria at 1,300 m a.s.l. has about 120 inhabitants. This small hamlet in the municipality of Dobbiaco, is situated in a quiet position, far away from the road of the Val Pusteria, and is definitely worth visiting.
The village was first mentioned in written documents at the beginning of the 14th century. Santa Maria has been a pilgrimage site since several centuries. When its parish church became too small for all the pilgrims coming from abroad, a new pilgrimage site, which can be visited, was built in 1470.
A pilgrimage path connects Santa Maria to the recently-restored church of S. Pietro in Monte.
