The Tre Cime nature park stretches over an overall surface area of 11,635 hectares in the north-eastern part of the Dolomites in the municipalities of Dobbiaco, Sesto and San Candido. The most famous peaks of the park are the peaks Cima Nove, Dieci, Undici (3,092 m), Dodici (2,336 m), the Monte Paterno (2,746 m) and of course the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (2,999 m), a UNESCO world heritage site since 2009.
More than two thirds of the area including the nature park in the Sesto Dolomites are composed of rocks and debris which is why only some particular plant species, such as ground laurels, yarrows or bell-flowers which thrive even in rock fissures and very narrow spots, grow here. The park is a natural habitat both for common birds like the white-winged snowfinch, the Alpine accentor and even eagles which are definitely rarer animals. The Lago di Landro in the eponymous valley is the only body of water in the nature park.
Previously known as Sesto Dolomites nature park, this protected area changed its name to Tre Cime nature park in February 2010 to celebrate the most well-known symbol of the Dolomites and the nature park.
