The relatively small Lake Dobbiaco is situated at 1,176 m a.s.l. in the eponymous municipality of the Val Pusteria. Its inlet and emissary is the Rienza stream and its perimeter measures 4.5 km. The lake is situated right at the border between the Three Peaks Nature Park and the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park.
This body of water formed after a rockfall and is one of the few wetlands of the Alps. During World War 2 five bunkers were built around the lake on request of Mussolini who had them erected to protect the borders of Italy. These constructions are part of the so-called alpine wall, a system of fortifications.
The nature trail was set up in 2000 and is an educational path running around the lake. The 11 information boards along the itinerary provide visitors with interesting information on the local environment, flora and fauna. At the interactive stations you can put your physical abilities to the test: can you beat the animals of the forest in the long jump? This child-friendly route can be completed in about two hours of walking and is suitable also for baby carriages. An adventure in nature.
