San Vigilio di Marebbe

San Vigilio di Marebbe is the chief village of the municipality and the hometown of the alpine skiers Manuela and Manfred Moelgg

San Vigilio is the main village of the municipality of Marebbe and is inhabited by 1,280 people. Located away from the main traffic lines at 1,285 m, agriculture and traditional handicrafts have an important role to play in this village. The historic buildings, the small residential buildings and the Ladin language, which is still spoken right here, are part of the culture. In the centre of San Vigilio, there is a Bronze statue of Katharina Lanz, who was born in this village. With a hay barn she fought against the troupes of Napoleon, defending her home. The centre of the village is the Baroque parish church and the surrounding village square.

A central role in “Al Plan de Mareo”, how San Vigilio is called in Ladin language, is taken in by nature. In fact, San Vigilio is located at the third largest protected area of South Tyrol and also hosts its visitors’ centre. San Vigilio is a paradise for mountain bikers: as intermediate station of the Transalp Challenge and its 250 km of trails it has become a known spot for this sport. Also is this nature park ideal for hiking.

In winter San Vigilio is a meeting point for those who love winter sports. Great cross-country ski runs, guided hiking or snow-shoeing tours with the mountain guide Simon Kehrer, a ski tour on the Cima delle Dieci or a toboggan run at the Fanes pasture, San Vigilio has got something for every taste.
