Schöneck Castle

Schöneck Castle lies in Issengo near Falzes and is believed to be the place of birth of the minnesinger and poet Oswald von Wolkenstein.

The late medieval Schöneck Castle in the municipality of Falzes lies at 958 metres asl and is believed to be the place of birth of the famous poet and minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein (1377-1445). Moreover, a ruin in the surroundings near the castle is believed to be the remains of the Pacher farm, where the famous painter and sculptor Michael Pacher was born.

Schöneck Castle was built by the Lords of Rodengo in the middle of the 13th century. The first official mentioning of a building in this place, however, date back to 1155 and 1164. In the course of time the castle entered into the possession of the Counts of Tyrol and Engelmar von Villanders.

Today, the keep, a part of the hall, the ruin of the chapel and parts of the historic walls can be visited. The chapel ruin also hosts a fresco of the artist Michael Pacher. Near the castle you will also find a restaurant.
