Ski tour to the Giogo di Selva

This relatively easy ski tour takes us to the Giogo di Selva saddle (2,342 m a.s.l.), starting from Rio Bianco in the Valle Aurina

We start our tour at the parking space of Rio Bianco (1,350 m), about 1.5 km in the west of the village. First the beaten traces of skiers lead us across a field, then we proceed on the toboggan run, for 20 minutes. After some bends we reach a junction, this is where we leave the toboggan run and turn off on the left, following the signposts "Mitterberger Alm" and "Speikboden".

After 10 more minutes, we reach a river bed, our route continues first along its right, then along its left side, towards the Mitterberger mountain huts, gently the way up. Short before reaching the huts at 1,978 m, the forest clears up and the path becomes a little steeper. After a short break on the high plateau of these alpine pastures, and admiring Mt Sasso Nero and the Corni di Ghega peaks, we continue across gentle hills and terrain that is ideal for back-country skiing.

Our destination is already visible and after some more zigzag and about 2 hours of walking, we reach the Giogo di Selva (2,342 m), providing a great view. We ski down along the route of ascent, the open country above the Mitterberger mountain huts provides enough space for skiing in untouched terrain. Also ideal terrain for snow-shoeing or those skiers who are not that skilled.

Please note: relatively easy ski tour, also suitable for beginners and those who are not too skilled in backcountry skiing. From the Giogo di Selva you can continue to Mt Seewassernock (2,516 m) and Mt Spico (2,517 m, Speikboden), providing a unique view on the skiing area.
