Ski tour to Mt Gran Mesule

With its 3,478 m a.s.l. Mt Gran Mesule is the second highest peak in the Zillertal Alps and a popular destination in late spring

Very early in the morning, long time before dawn, we drive to the Valle dei Molini in the Valle di Tures and to Lappago where we continue for about 700 m until we reach the parking space near Lake Neves (1,860 m a.s.l.). From here we carry our skis along the road until the end of the lake. Arrived at a small bridge, we put our skis on and hike upwards along the left shore of the Rio delle Fonti. Arrived under the so-called Südlicher Möselenock, we turn right towards the steep Eastern Neves Glacier (Ghiacciaio Orientale di Neves).

On a more gentle section we head towards the last steep ascent between Mt Gran Mesule and Mt Piccolo Mesule. Arrived at the mountain pass between the two peaks, we take off our skis and hike upwards the steep east ridge by foot. Fortunately, we don't need any crampons today.

Finally arrived at the peak of Mt Gran Mesule (3,478 m), we enjoy a breathtaking view, which reaches far beyond the Zillertal Alps. In fact, words cannot express this beautiful scenery with the Dolomites, the Austrian glacier and the mountains of the rear Valle Aurina. We descend on our skis on the ascent route. A wonderful firn snow compensates us for the early wakeup.

Please note: usually, the road to Lake Neves is open for traffic only from the beginning of May. If the road is closed you have to carry your skis from Lappago di Sopra to Lake Neves, which makes the tour much longer. This is a steep late spring skiing tour on very sunny slopes, the peak slope is of moderate difficulty, the peak ridge is difficult. We recommend you to take crampons and ice axes with you.
